#35 Georgia Institute of Technology

By lindsay, on Aug 26, 2010

This post is part of CampusReform.org's guide to the nation's top 100 colleges as ranked by US News and World Report. Each day, CampusReform.org profiles a different college, examines its political climate, and offers items of interest to conservative students, parents, and alumni. The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), located in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the nation's premier research institutions and part of the 35-school university system of Georgia. Founded in 1885 with a class of 88 students, the school has expanded greatly from its humble beginings and now boasts an enrollment of more than 20,000 undergraduates. Georgia Tech is known for its emphasis on engineering and science as well as its Division I sports team, the Yellow Jackets.

Campus Life

There is less political activity at Georgia Tech than many schools we have profiled, likely due to the school's emphasis on science and technology. However, interested students will still find opportunities for involvement.

At Georgia Tech, there are 13 political groups of which seven are liberal and six are conservative.

Liberals groups on campus include College Democrats; Roosevelt Institute, a liberal student think tank with national chapters; Students for Justice in Palestine; Environmental Alliance; Amnesty International; Students Organizing for Sustainability; and the Pride Alliance.

The conservative groups on campus are the College Republicans; The Conservative Buzz, a conservative student newspaper; Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow; Students for Life; Students of Objectivism; and Students Organizing for Fair Tax. The italicized groups are affiliated with CampusReform.org's Campus Leadership Program, which offers groups advice, assistance, and many kinds of support.

The College Republican chapter is particularly strong, and created a stir on campus with its affirmative action bake sale during a week-long celebration of conservatism. The bake sale satirizes affirmative action by offering baked goods for sale at different prices dependent on the buyer's race or gender.
